Rocktober comes but once a year, giving me reason for a quick post to note that Double Fine, developer of Psychonauts, Brütal Legend, Costume Quest & all your other favorites have just announced their Mega-Action Mega-Sale, dropping prices by as much as 50% on basically pretty much every game they’ve ever made across Steam, XBLA and the Mac App Store.

The full breakdown of all the sales can be found here, which has the extra bonus advantage of allowing me to remind people of this Boing Boing post I put together for Brütal Legend‘s launch, which showcases a number of amazing concept pieces by Scott C, Peter Chan, Nathan Stapley, Levi Ryken, Razmig Mavlian, and Mark Hamer, all of which will be housed in this upcoming art book that’s expected to drop just in time for Christmas.

Double Fine art director Lee Petty takes you on a slightly more consumer-focused — and very much more condensed — version of the tour he gave at this year’s GDC through the basically jaw-dropping sights and sounds of the world of Brütal Legend.

GAMESCOM: INTO THE PIT WITH NEW BRüTAL LEGEND FOOTAGE

If you missed EA’s live-stream of this morning’s GamesCom conference, you missed Double Fine head Tim Schafer showing off my favorite new detail of Brütal Legend‘s combat: a double-team attack that can be pulled off with any number of partners in the game, but specifically the first, where lead character Eddie had his female cohort mount his shoulders, concert audience style, and used his lifted lighter to ignite her flame attack.

But still, what you do get is the trailer above, with little slices of wooly mammoth, beast riding, and mosh-pit-protected brilliance, along with bits of its online multiplayer, which is demonstrated at greater length (and with 100% more rhythm-game attacks), below:

And, the capper: Double Fine has also announced that a demo for the game will be released via PSN and Xbox Live next month, with a slice of gameplay to tide you over for the following month until its October 13th release.

SOUNDS BRüTAL: TIM SCHAFER SOLVES A RUBIK’S CUBE TO BRüTAL LEGEND’S SOUNDTRACK

Not the soundtrack itself, mind, but Double Fine music director Emily Ridgway reading the hundred-plus list of included songs representing Brütal Legend‘s who’s-who of heavy metal, from 3 Inches of Blood to Wrath of Killenstein.

My favorite addition? Two tracks from Anvil, who, if you’ve seen the recently released documentary (and if you haven’t, do so soon), you know are basically just about the nicest people on earth and who entirely deserve to have a few extra minutes to shine here.

The entire track list is included behind the jump.

OH, MY DARLIN’: TIM SCHAFER NARRATES THE FIRST 20 MINUTES OF BRüTAL LEGEND

Tim Schafer gives IGN a full walk-through — well, OK, of just the first seventeen minutes, really — of Double Fine’s forthcoming Brütal Legend (the second video is below the fold), but that’s more than enough to fall for Eddie’s Clementine: the guitar brought back with him to the Age of Rock which is now imbued with special powers.

Probably you’ll want to hit that ‘play hi-res’: IGN’s embeddables are annoyingly quite rigidly sized. UPDATE: replaced with a Giant Bomb player much more embed-friendly.

The latest look at Double Fine’s PS3/Xbox 360 open world metal slasher Brütal Legend introduces the star power the studio’s tapped with its four Rock Gods: Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, Lita Ford, and, of course, Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne.

In the first of what promises to be a viral series leading up to Brütal Legend‘s October release, LucasArts vet and Double Fine head Tim Schafer continues to prove his acting mettle by making this appearance alongside Jack Black and Steve Agee, a performance so tour de force that it makes Black puke.

Not gonna lie: I was big gunning to feature Brütal Legend in an upcoming installment of Concept Album since this GDC session, and was quite disappointed to be beat to the punch by remorseless rapscallions ripping half-blurry mid-res versions of the art from the GDC-stored PowerPoint. Anyway, this one was the most brilliant bit, by the inimitable Scott C., who has his own Action Comic here.

I think we can all agree there is no part of this that won’t strike a happy chord with just about everyone.

BRüTAL NEWS IS NOW: EA TO PUBLISH BRüTAL LEGEND

brutallegend.jpgI knew funny business was afoot early this morning when Double Fine moved their Brütal Legend threat level system to “violated lemon” (‘I hear news knocking at the door!’), and it wasn’t for naught: the developer has just announced that EA will publish the they’re-making-me-call-it-NWOB-heavy-metal action/adventure for PS3 and Xbox 360 in Fall of 2009.

It’s good news not only for the game, which has been floating in somewhat of an uncomfortable news-void for the last year following the Vivendi/Activision merger, but also for EA, who’ve been moving from strength to boutique-gaming strength with this and the recent announcement that they’d be releasing a new game from Killer7/No More Heroes dev Grasshopper Manufacture.

As noted before (where you can also see its debut trailer), the first new footage of the game will be shown Sunday night at the Spike TV Video Game Awards show.
