ONE SHOT: STREETPONG, THE FIRST
A gorgeous night shot by one of indie gaming’s leading renaissance men, Vincent Diamante (also: thatgamecompany’s Cloud and Flower composer), used to illustrate Chris Dahlen’s similarly wonderful Edge piece on Diamante’s own Mobile Gamer 1: a street-ready version of Pong that you play by physically rolling the cabinet on its casters.

AVOID MISSING: THE PONG MUSEUM OPENS ITS VIRTUAL DOORS
Recently opened to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ralph Baer’s first TV-displayable version of the game that would come to be known as Pong (or is it the 42nd? Let’s just call it 40-ish), the Pong Museum has curated a staggering amount of information on the game in its myriad earliest forms (including scans of each of the consoles themselves, even).
Even better, though, is the video Baer sent in to the site of he and hardware tech Bill Harrison playing some of the first ever rounds of multiplayer videogames, showing a surprisingly organic looking game compared to the strict vectors of the later versions (this version had a separate knob for fakeout curveballs).
The site’s webshop even includes a DIY build-your-own-Pong-kit, which, unfortunately, appears to be PAL only for now, though they do ship to the US.

BAFTA TO HONOR PONG/ATARI HEAD NOLAN BUSHNELL
Though the Academy hasn’t yet announced its official lineup for this year’s BAFTA Game Awards, it has sent a release noting that ‘Pong pioneer’ Nolan Bushnell will be this year’s Fellowship award winner. The honor is “presented for outstanding achievement through a body of work,” and last year (its inaugural year for a games-related award) was presented to Spore/SimCity creator Will Wright.
Academy Chairman David Parfitt said Bushnell’s contribution “is nothing short of remarkable; he ushered in an era, the legacy of which is the vibrant, evolving industry we see before us today.”
Bushnell is, of course, the entrepreneur behind both Pong and Atari’s foray into home consoles, who now spends his time heading uWink, the touchscreen enhanced ‘social entertainment restaurant,’ as well as chairman of Austin’s GameWager, which lets players compete in online games for prizes.
The full list of nominees for this year’s BAFTAs will be released on February 10th.
