From the 8-bit Operators original, to Miles Davis tribute Kind of Bloop, to Daft Punk, to Weezer, the chiptune cover compilation craze is in full swing, and appears to be not ending any time soon, as True Chip Till Death digs up information on Emulator Punks!!, a new Russian tribute to electropunk outfit The Prodigy.

Above is the first sample from the album, with Paza Rahm‘s “Charly (Trip Into Drum and Bass Paza Chip Remix)”: more information on the upcoming release can be dug up via the official site.

From videogame orchestra’s Castlevania-esque remake of Island in the Sun, to nordloef’s euro-chip-disco remix of Buddy Holly, to Anamanaguchi, Tugboat and Bit Shifter’s typically excellent showings, the awesomeness of Pterodactyl Squad’s just-released 8-bit Weezer cover compilation album basically speaks for itself.

The tracklist:

1. Island In The Sun (Belmont’s Revisal) – videogame orchestra
2. Holiday – Anamanaguchi
3. El Scorcho – Tugboat
4. The World Has Turned And Left Me Here – Bit Shifter
5. You Won’t Get With Me Tonight – PDF Format
6. Hash Pipe – seal of quality
7. In The Garage – OxygenStar
8. You Gave Your Love To Me Softly – :(
9. We Are All On Drugs – Rabato
10. Jamie – Unicorn Dream Attack
11. Come To My Pod – Mahamajama
12. Why Bother? – I Fight Dragons
13. Buddy Holly – nordloef
14. I Do – arcadecoma.

And it’s free, and you should just go get it now. [via crashfaster]

LISTEN: AN ODE TO GRASSHOPPER’S ON-HOLD SILVER CASE DS PORT

Bad news via an excerpted interview with Goichi ‘Killer7/No More Heroes‘ Suda on Nintendo site Cubed3 (via Siliconera), where he reveals that the DS port of his PlayStation original detective adventure The Silver Case is functionally complete, but that its release is “still up in the air” until he can figure out a way to “remake it properly to fit in with the current generation of gamers.” (Most frustratingly, the PS1 downloadable is currently up for sale on Sony’s PSN store.)

The port of the game was first announced over two years ago at Australia’s GO3 conference, which is a long time to wait to be told to wait some more, but with an already cool reception to Suda’s recently released Flower, Sun and Rain DS remake (which I still have yet to make much of a dent on), he may be on to something.

To smooth over the hurt, though, I offer this: a live remix of Silver Case‘s theme as spun by none less than Kazutoshi Iida (seen right, being awesome), director of a number of his own cult-legend games from PS1 sims Tail of the Sun and zen-ish ocean explorer Aquanaut’s Holiday to Nintendo 64/GameCube’s Doshin the Giant.

The performance was part of Grasshopper’s first live event, called 25 Hour Party People (spot Suda’s typical anglophile reference), which you can spy photos of via an ancient post on Metal Gear producer Hideo Kojima’s blog, and I’m presuming you’ll probably dig it as much as I do:

LISTEN: ANIMAL COLLECTIVE’S MY GIRLS, IN 8-BITS

And while we’re on the subject, let’s just make this our own mini-#musicmonday, and get straight to this: Pieter ‘Dr. Zilog‘ Montoulieu doing a chiptune cover (mp3) of Animal Collective’s hipster runaway favorite My Girls. Zilog takes a few liberties here and there, but essentially captures the spirit, especially paired with his low-res filtered version of Brody Baker/Shelly Zander‘s original video.

This isn’t the first time Zilog’s gone down the 8-bit indie path: above, his version of MGMT’s Kids (mp3). [via GSW]

By way of French act Je Deviens DJ en 3 Jours — who released a new running-through-the-streets-of-Nice music video a mere two weeks ago — comes a chiptune-powered tribute to fellow French musicians Daft Punk: DA CHIP!

The 11 track compilation, featuring covers by the likes of EvilWezil and Random is perfectly suited for your next lo-fi French electro dance party (as witnessed in JDDE3J’s Aerodynamic cover above). DA CHIP! is provided as a free download with individual bonus tracks available on the site.

LISTEN: YMCK REMIX CLASSIC KATAMARI FOR PS3’S KATAMARI FOREVER

Kicking off a series of official posts for Sony’s PlayStation blog on Namco’s upcoming PS3 ‘tribute’ release Katamari Forever, producer Kazuhito Udetsu relays a message from longtime series (and Noby Noby Boy) sound designer Yuu Miyake, who explains the process of collaborating with various Japanese acts to remix classic Katamari tracks.

Saying he wanted a split between ‘organic’ and ‘electric’ sounds, Miyake highlights oft-blogged NES-samplers YMCK and the chiptune swing of their “A Crimson Rose and a Gin Tonic” remix. Unfortunately, we don’t get the whole track, but we do get enough to hear that it’s going to be another must-buy collection.

Click through to the original post to hear precisely the opposite: an all-live rendition of the original game’s You Are Smart.

In preparation for their upcoming show, taking place 8pm, Friday, June 26 at San Francisco’s 835 Geary St. Caffeine location, DUTYCYCLE have released another of their free samplers — possibly their most accessible lineup to date — ranging from nicely traditional anthemic chiptunes from Nonfinite and LURV, and some fantastic downtempo beats and glitches from starPause, Harbour and Kallipolis.

Download the five track EP here, and find out more information on the show and its artists via its Upcoming page.

The last post where I featured Bit Shifter‘s 2007 BlipFest performance didn’t quite go over so hotly with a few of you, apparently, so try this one — freshly published from 2 Player Productions — on for size instead. It’s from a Tank performance several months later in Spring of 2008, and is a bit more classically melodic. Now do you get why the kids are dancing?
